Becoming a Touhou Fan.... How did it happen for you?
« on: February 02, 2012, 03:21:45 pm »
So, how did you all get addicted to Touhou?

Me, I watched one of my friends play it in math class. So, I got interested, and started searching up videos of Touhou 8 Extra Mode clear. It made me go O.O lolwut. I really liked the music though, especially Invisible Full Moon (That's probably what turned me into a Reisen fan.) And then... I actually played the game. I sucked pretty bad at first, (IN Stage 3 with 5 lives and slowmode ON) but then I got a lot better (IN Stage 6 with 2 lives and slowmode OFF). Anyhow, afterwards I found the giant fanbase and other games and found myself addicted to Touhou

Let's play Katawa Shoujo.

Like a fair lot of people here (probably, at least to some that I was able to ask), started with the music themselves (not vids, the original songs and some remixes). From there, it caught on and now, I'm into the different fan games and audio circles.

I'd heard some of the tracks on the Youtube, I believe starting around '08, so I believe the songs that caught my ear were Love Coloured Master Spark, or U.N. Owen, or one of those other really popular ones. I looked more into the series and got interested in the characters, but hadn't followed any of the games or fandom at the time. The first game I played was probably IaMP because I like fighters, but I also played PoFV for the competitive nature of it. I can't recall which I played first, but there it is. I started playing the main series games afterward. I believe starting with PCB, then EoSD, then IN. I stuck with those ones for about 2 years, and got use to the mechanics of them. I wasn't following the games, as I mentioned, so under my nose, I hadn't even noticed UFO or GFW get released. I did see that Soku was made, and I picked that up. It is still probably my favourite game in the series.

So I stuck with those games and didn't even touch any main series game post IN. I watched some replays and 1cc runs, but the games didn't interest me. Even today, I still can't get use to the 4.0 power system or fractional lives/bombs, and I still can't 1cc any of the MoF onward games on any difficulty. But, that aside, I did start following the news for TD when it was announced, and then just last year I started looking into the community/fandom. I'm already sick of tsundere Alice.

Yeah, MoF bomb system kind of annoys me, but I can live with it.

Oh i remember that time. Kumikyoku medley video -> Marisa stole the precious thing -> wtf is that awesome music and cute girls from? That's how i was introduced into touhou fanart/music addiction. But i tried an actual toho game (EoSD) much later, and after 2,5 month of playing got my first normal 1CC. That happened a year ago, and since then i am more focused on playing danmaku than consuming fanart, music and stuff.

Yay, this thread again.

I was on Desuchan in 2006 (go ahead, laugh, get it out of your system) when someone posted a mash-up of IOSYS' "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing" using Rozen Maiden characters - Suigintou was Alice, and Shinku was Marisa. I thought the band was cool, and looked up some more of their stuff. Every attempt at finding lyrics kept taking me to the Touhou wiki. Eventually, I figured out this band was writing songs in the voices of Touhou characters, and so I read up some more about the game on the wiki.

Months went by. I was intrigued by the sheer numbers of the cast, and how much attention to detail was put into their backstories and interpersonal relationships. I eventually broke down and got my hands on Mountain of Faith, which was the newest game at the time, and was hooked from that point on.

Indeed. :V

Back when I played Smash, I would hang around the Ice Climber section of Smashboards. A discussion came up about bullet hell games, and one of the mods posted a link to Kefit's SA Stage 6 Lunatic NDNB video. That wasn't the first time I had heard of Touhou, but that video is really what first got me interested, and I never looked back.

Are you me? 'cept I don't think I found the vids on desuchan itself, I followed a string of links.
Anyway, since I'm weird, I tend to look up everything I find, so I found out about Touhou straight away after that.

I remember stumbling upon a McRoll video, while randomly browsing Youtube.
Some people in the comments were mentioning a certain "U.N. Owen was her?", so I thought about looking that up.
When I listened to that song I was like "Holy s**t this sounds pretty nice!" :o and thanks to the related videos on the side I discovered Remilia's theme and from the latter many other Touhou songs.

Then I started to read about the characters and after that, I got interested in the games, mainly by watching RobinLSL's videos on Youtube. After a while I decided to start playing the games myself, starting from EoSD.

Oh, boy! I'm not letting this thread get away for a 14th time! I blame this guy. No, really. Touhou came up in conversation about five years ago and I asked what it was. The answer covered the basics without telling me what I should think about it going in. I thoroughly enjoyed the games and how nuts the fandom was, so it sorta naturally became a reliable source for all sorts of entertainment and silliness.

Back when I was a MUGEN freak, I was looking for quality characters to add to my roster. I stumbled upon on a character that had a Street Fighter IV win screen as her image preview. Being a fan of Street Fighter IV, I decided to try her out.

After downloading this character known as "Utsuho", I launched up the training mode to see how her moves were like. The first move I did was one of her level 1 supers. This super had Utsuho jumping towards her opponent, kicking them in the face, then slamming them into the ground with her foot. Flames started bursting out from her foot, and then she finished off the super by punting her opponent away with her other leg. :o She became one of my favorite MUGEN characters to play as.

One day, I wondered what game she originated from so I looked up her name on Youtube. I found a video of someone fighting her on Lunatic. The first attack she did was gigantic wall of death heading towards the player. "What the hell!? She started off with an Abyss Nova!" was my reaction. I became even more surprised when the guy actually survived it, then she did the attack again. The fight went on with me on the edge on my seat. After the fight ended, I listened to her theme and grew a liking to it.

A few days later, my friend asked if I wanted to play a Touhou game. Seeing the Utsuho video, "FUCK NO! That shit is impossible!" was my answer. He then lent me his SWR and Hisoutensoku copy. After spending a week learning how to play Hisoutensoku, we faced each other in a best out of 5. I won 3-0 due to playing a very aggressive Remilia. After that, he took his copies back and went home, leaving me to play the story modes. I grew more interested in Touhou and started to read about the characters on the wiki. Before I knew it, I became a fan very quickly.

Months later at my friend's house, my friend let me face Utsuho in SA as she was the one who started it all.

For me it was the music. The first Touhou related thing I did was watching a replay of PCB Stage 6. I was blown away by how well the music synchronizes, the beauty of the patterns and of course the themes itself.
I then proceeded to watch hear about 50 of the themes at one evening. After about two weeks of listening, I couldn't resist any longer and tried the games (in chronological order).
My first try was EoSD Normal and because I never played Bullet hell shooters before, I kept dieing at Icicle Fall :o (at that time I just couldn't figure out how to get past that without bombing or dieing...)

I can't recall it too clearly, but it went something like this:
A friend introduced me to one of the really old games on the PC-98 thing during year 12 of high school. I couldn't read the dialogue (or display it on my computer for that matter, it was all !!!!!!?sd!!!! and such) so I decided to try out 6 instead. First few times I played it I was pretty terrible, having to use a continue to get up to Meiling and failing to Patchouli even using all the continues. I played on and off for a couple of months, around that time finding more and more great videos on youtube.
Parts of one I had seen earlier but had not realised was from Touhou was 'Marisa stole the Precious thing' and 'Help me Eirin'. 'Alice->dere' and 'Dolls Play' (man there were a lot of Alice songs back then) were also catchy enough to make me look for the original pieces. I kept finding more entertaining videos and more of the original scores went onto my playlist that I started playing the latter Touhou games before finishing 6. It was around that point I watched "bad apple" and could only recognise about eight characters, half of them in the first sequence.
Despite this, I thought the design for practically all of them was exceptional, and even the little things they were doing made me want to learn more about it (for example, the part where it transitions from Kanako and Suwako to Yukari piqued my interest in her character and her powers, which I wasn't aware of at the time). I finished PCB, and then IN, and rewatched the video, finding I could recognise more of the characters. For some reason this was really fun, being able to name sillouettes of characters I could previously only guess at, so I just started playing all the games I could get my hands on, reading all the wiki and some fanworks, and comics, and at that point I think I could safely be considered a fan.

"The Feast Never Ends" was another one that kept me interested (despite, or perhaps because of having only one working speaker and thus having half the lyrics muted).

I remember first trying out PCB and IN on my friend's computer back during ZUN's little break before MoF. I thought it was awesome, and I guess it just kinda started from there. To this day, IN remains my favorite in the series.

I've made more complete responses before but I'll be brief with this one.
The porn, the music, the videos (of gameplay). In that order.
What's really kept me into it (aside from being a great game) is the whole "community" aspect. Never really played a game with such an interactive fanbase before.

I first learned about Touhou via the kumikyouku medley. There was something different about overdrive and marisa stole the precious thing that really interested me, so I tried to figure out what the original songs were. After discovering a huge collection of cool music from touhou project, I became a fan of ZUN's music and games.

I came across the song after exploring the Vocaloid side of Youtube, and I then became interested in who the characters were.

Rule ⑨ Touhou can become a crossover with anything.
That's how I discovered Touhou. Was searching for an old japanese game that I used to play (Live-a-Live) and I watched a playthrough of Touhou-a-live instead.
I got interested, got confused, then got addicted. From having no idea on who is who, in a year, I almost know every character from Touhou 6 - 13.
So I'm a newbie that can't socialize directly and can hide my emotions, so what?

Cirno's Perfect Math Class and Orin's Hell Restaurant.

When I first saw it, I thought "  :* So cool!! I wonder who they all are?!!"
When I see it nowadays, I'm reeling off character names, appearances, abilities and species.

Shows how fast I become a fan. I first watched Cirno's Perfect Math Class and Orin's Hell Restaurant about a year and a bit ago.
Now I am a total Touhou nerd

On Bad Apple!!, I was confused when I first saw it because I had heard the original stage 3 song  first, but didn't know the characters at the time, and I didn't even recognize that it was the same song. It's still weird to me that Meiling isn't in it.

Cirno's Perfect Math Class
Yeah, I saw a flash about that one and decided to search up the character name on Google. I think that's what made me a touhou fan by playing EoSD. I sucked hard. I failed at Cirno easy-modo. But then, I can almost 1cc till Stage 5 Normal Mode. But yeah, people call me a Touhou addict because I draw pictures of them and not games or anime like "Naruto"( I personally think it became shit a long time ago ), and "Bleach"( The hell, named after some stain remover. No offense ).. Yeah, so gonna go play thS now.

Definitely IOSYS. Then I dug deeper, and realized IOSYS albums are absolute trash, and there's way better doujin music out there :D

But IOSYS for sure is what got me into the games in the first place, and that's probably true for most Touhou fans. Now I'm touhou'in erry day. I even play touhou arrnangements on my radio show now, hopefully some people will get into Touhou that way. They'll go "hmm this Shibayan track is really good!" :D

For me, it was Megamari. I thought the game featured characters from different series, rather than just different chapters of the same series. I eventually got curious enough to search about those characters, and searched Cirno, since she was the only name in romanji. MotK was the first link, been sorta lurkin ever since.

Oh hey, I just realize that I'm 4 days away from the two-year anniversary of the first time I played a Touhou game. :o

Anyway, I was first exposed to Touhou about 2 years and 3 months ago, when one of the Youtubers I was subscribed to uploaded a video that mixed/synced a video with Cirno's theme.  I had no idea what the song was but I absolutely loved it, so I searched the comments and saw that someone said the song was called "Beloved Tomboyish girl".  I searched Youtube, and found the original song and remixes, including Cirno's Perfect Math Class and Chirumiru.  Then, after a while, I began to grow curious about the source of this awesome song, and so I went searching around, and found out about EoSD.  Again, I searched Youtube for videos of this game, became interested, and the rest is history...

Aaanyway, I heard of the name a long time before that, but I never bothered to check it out until that one day last year when I was bored xD
Guess it led to something perfect for me ^^

First game I played was EoSD, and I fell in love with it and Flandre right at the start :3
Oh and yeah, I also play them(as I do with all the other games such as Kingdom Hearts) for the awesome music O:
