As an aside, I've been watching Pokecapn's LP of Sonic Unleashed. My brain is now alternating between that repetitive jazzy night-battle-theme and the H'Alaska day-stage theme being stuck in my head.

Just wait until said night-battle theme starts driving them slightly insane. If you haven't already, you'll see when it does. :V

Speaking of which, I recently finished watching the group's Sonic 2006 LP. My God, I feel their pain. As well as the pain of everyone else who had to sit through that game's terribad story. Though for some reason KFJ chanting song lyrics during End of the World didn't sound as jarring as I thought it would be. Maybe my mind was focused more on how mentally unhinged pokecapn was becoming instead (he was the one playing through most of the game after all).

Yes, the final level of the game made my hurt physically, even if I only watched that LP. It's just so bad, and seeing pokecapn and co. suffering, it made me suffer as well.

I may not have played 2006/Unleashed/Colors, but boy did I experience them by watching pokecapn and crew LP them. (Colors was a pleasant surprise. A VERY pleasant surprise.)

And I, meanwhile, have actually played each of them.  The experience is more than a little different playing them actively, though yeah you can probably spare yourself the pain for '06.

*Sips tea*

Also I actually enjoy the final level if not simply because the best parts of '06 were when you weren't playing as the Hedgehogs.  Really.

Colours was a somewhat hidden release that was actually amazing because they pretty much took what was good in Unleashed and made it even better, and tested the Wii's graphics capabilities.

And then took all that into Generations to make it the awesome nostalgia.

Yeah, pretty much.  Colors was wonderful; the only issue with it was a couple levels that were either suddenly very slow (The two acts based on the spring platform aren't... particularly thrilling by any stretch of the imagination) or really boring (Sadly, Terminal Velocity Act 1 qualifies as this and is the worst level in the game despite how awesome its setup was, I mean come on you're trying to outrun a black hole here!  The DS version actually does it better by changing up the control scheme entirely so you're viewing it from overhead and aiming towards ramps, boosts, avoiding holes, etc as you're chased by the Nega Wisp Armor.)

But yeah, Generations pretty much worked by taking everything that worked from... well, almost every Sonic game in the past and tossing out what didn't.  And Colors and Unleashed had a whole lot of good for them to build off of.

I'm looking forward to seeing if they'll go forward with this setup into the next original Sonic title and hopefully keep what they've learned.

You should definitely play Colors for yourself if you can. As for Unleashed, if you can put up with the tedious Werehog levels and the mediocre story, then it'll be worth it just for the Hedgehog levels, which are by far the fastest iteration of that particular mechanic. Sure, Generations' version may be more polished overall, but it's neither as fast or as difficult (at least not before the endgame). It really is sort of a surreal experience to be going as fast as you do in Unleashed.

Well, Colors as a whole is already a lot slower than Unleashed since the former focuses more on the 2D platforming. The spring platform levels didn't feel like that much of a stretch because of that.

And don't you mean Act 2?

You've pretty much summed up my experience playing Adventure.

Is it bad that with the exception of you-know-who (although it admittedly gets enjoyable once it's no longer forced on you), I prefer every other character's story/gameplay over Sonic's in that game? I especially enjoyed Tails's version of Speed Highway and Gamma's version of Hot Shelter.

No, I mean what I said.  Act 2 is short and sweet and was basically what Act 1 SHOULD have been like, minus being a lot longer of course.  Act 1 as it was was just... I don't like it at all.

And yeah, it's slower overall, but some stages felt really slow on top of that, like you couldn't speed them up if you wanted to, I mean.  I guess that's the easiest way to put it.

Not entirely.  Well, I'm not much of a fan of Amy; but Omega, Knuckles, and Tails are all really fun.  Especially Tails.

Why? It's not a bad game at all, though sometimes Werehog levels is annoying. (I'm looking at you, Empire City with your spiky rails)

Also, just cleared SCD2011 because I'm slow. To be honest, I hate the special stages in this version, it's almost impossible to control the character for me, and when I'm close to UFO, it just... magically goes out of reach. :( Had to destroy all generators in the past to get GF. By the way, I've got Heavy Metal and Saviour of the Planet on my first try, definitely wasn't expecting that.

I think the main problem with Unleashed is that the developers were told to lengthen the game and did too well at the job, with both the werehog levels (mainly having to defeat all/certain enemies in order to continue) and the medal collecting in order to unlock new levels.

Other than that, the core mechanics actually aren't that bad. Honestly? I'd love to see Sega take the Werehog mechanics and bring back Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Ristar.

It's the werehog segments, the medal-grinding, and, uh, everything from Eggmanland on.

Though medibot's "medal identification" has inspired me to someday, down the line, make a game where each of the random-pointless-medals actually does have a random-pointless-item like that.

EDIT: Also, I watched through the Sonic and the Black Knight LP, and I have had Knight of the Wind in my head all freaking day :3

Okay, these levels look leagues better than what we saw in Ep1, and dare I say... somewhat original? I'm especially loving that oilfield stage.

The graphics are pretty good, but I'm not really sure how will it play. I didn't even noticed something was wrong with Ep1 physics, actually. :wat: But I hated the leveldesign. (Specially Lost Labyrinth Act 2 - whose bright idea was to add that torch puzzle in there?)

So Aquatic Ruins, Oil Ocean and some kind of Ice Cap with a theme park theme... kinda like that one level in Sonic Advance 2.

SEGA's officially released some more screenshots of Ep2 and declared we'll be seeing a gameplay trailer in a week.

I am loving the hell out of that snow level, it's giving me huge throwbacks to Endless Mine.

S4 Ep2 looks pretty cool. It's a shame that it will be short like the first one. I didn't really bother with Episode 1 because they were splitting the game up, and I figured they'd release a compilation somewhere along the lines. Then I noticed that all of the levels were just rehashes of older Zones, and that was truly disappointing.

Episode 2 looks to have gone 50/50, by giving us a reworked Aquatic Ruin and Ice Cap, along with what seems like new areas. However, it does seem like there are still similarities with previous Zones. There's that oil derrick level that will probably have an oil spill at some point, and the rollercoaster level which seems to blend Carnival Night and Stardust Speedway.

If they're going to keep remaking older style levels, then here's hoping that they remake Scrap Brain, Hydrocity, Flying Battery, or Death Egg (S&K).

Those would be fun stages to remake.

As for Episode 2, eh, doesn't look too appealing; however, the Sonic 2 HD community project...:*

S4 Episode 2 gameplay trailer, fresh from GameSpot.

I'm not really seeing enough of it in action to make a full assessment, but there looks to be a lot of interesting mechanics. Also, please tell me the trailer music's the kind of thing we're going to be getting in-game

Hm ... S2HD seems kinda cool, but 1. I fear it will also maintain the gameplay aspects which, uh, led me to constantly abuse savestates in the original, and 2. I'm also going "hmmm" at how the devblog last updated in June 2011.
