I had played "A Hollow Mirror Field" and loved the plot, my favorite from a VN I've played, though it's been a while so I do not remember much details.

Though I'd be monumentally late to do so I'd really enjoy playing "Chaos;Head"

Higurashi finished. I think I made pretty good time. :D

The last three arcs were all immensely satisfying and extremely awesome. The mystery's answers were nothing like what I expected, but I have no complaints (beyond Kai not having the character cafe discussions after each arc) ... although I would have liked to see some more of Sonozaki Akane, she seems incredibly badass.
In hindsight, Higurashi really was overall better than Umineko mostly because it's story actually had focus. Higurashi's endings were increasingly satisfactory while in Umineko things got increasingly ridiculous with all the magic tangents (Erika is still awesome though :V). Especially in the answer arcs, where in Higurashi the resolutions are realistic (with some exceptions), mature, and strongly contrast the madness of the earlier arcs while Umineko just teased and built up anticipation more and more until its rather weak conclusion.

Higurashi also wins in character development because where Higurashi had the characters learn and develop over each arc, Umineko just threw in more and more characters instead. Umineko still had interesting characters, but they weren't developed in the way Higurashi's were. Higurashi's characters had realistic problems and slowly resolved them over the course of the entire series while Umineko's characters didn't really develop. They were only "revealed", only to be killed off shortly after. Higuashi's characters had their outer personalities, their inner secrets, and growth, while Umineko's characters only had the first two.
I was considering starting Umineko pretty soon, but this makes me a little hesitant. Suikama, the onus is on you to convince me it's still worth playing. :V

Just go for it. The most fun I had with Umineko was coming up with all sorts of crazy theories only for them to be smashed to pieces over and over again. I think part of that came from the fact that I read it as it was coming out so I actually had a lot of time between each episode to think about what might happen in the next. Up until the last few episodes, Umineko felt like it was building up to some ultimate twist conclusion, to the point where it was inevitable that the end would be a let down. However despite the disappointment, the excitement of trying to solve an "unsolvable" mystery and of all the crazy magical Pheonix Wrightesque battles was still something that was real, at least for a while. The real experience was in process rather than the destination, so just play the damn game already. :V

hollow mirror field? you mean 11eyes CrossOver? it was decent i guess, just that it felt like it borrowed too many elements from other stories.
and are you reading Chaos;Head or Chaos;Head Noah? the game had a nice atmosphere

I recently picked up Katawa Shoujo from their blog/site and just finished Shizune's route. Kinda surprising and really confusing in many parts but overall I'm still glad I started off with my favorite character. I'm considering going for Lily next.

Tsukihime still remains my all-time favorite VN for the story and build up with it.

Alrighty, Umineko finished.

Hmm, I'm not really sure what to think about this. The music was fantastic and the logic battles SMALL BOMBS, amongst other things, were really awesome, but I think it could have ended well enough after Arc 6, or at the least cut out Arc 7 which seemed mostly like filler to me. Similarly, I felt it kind of got a little too convoluted for its own good near the end. It was still a lot of fun overall of course, and the amount of crazy, memorable scenes definitely outweighed the more boring parts. I think I prefer Higurashi, though.

Probably will take a break from VNs for a little while unless anyone has any in particular to recommend. Don't say Katawa Shoujo, I already know about that one. :V

Anyways, Mahou Tsukai no Yoru trial was great. Hope Jast doesn't fuck up the release date of Steins;Gate too long.

Still working at Katawa Shoujo. Just after meeting Rin, though, need to make more progress.

I have Umineko, but still am trying to figure out how to install it.

Katawa Shoujo! My heart~~~~. I finished the 5 routes in about a week and a half, about a week and a half ago. Except Shizune's which I did last and largely skipped through (I need to go back and read it). I popped over cause I was wondering: What ZUN composed song would fit any of the charaters in KS? There was a similiar thread elsewhere, but I have like laughable general music knowledge. Can't think of anything at the moment, but I'm sure there are great choices there.
I also read planetarium recently, to basically the same effect as that earlier poster. I found the beginning and middle quite unendearing, was wondering why the MC was even staying  despite his voiced opinions otherwise. The fight was welcomely atmospheric, the ending was damn touching but over drawn out. That being said I would have bawled my eyes out if I had been at all more than marginally attached. I'm not sure whether I like or dislike Key's writing style.

That doesn't mean you're prohibited from talking about it in this one, especially when the latter half of your post is about Planetarian instead.

I'm not really sure what the relation of Planetarian to KS is unless there's some sort of subtly and well-placed joke or connection to be made here; then again I've been awake since 5:50 AM and am really out of it now, so... Yeah, um, the whole hype I used to be all up-ons regarding Katawa Shoujo is very quickly dying down; for some reason, I just couldn't really get into the writing as much as I wanted to. I mean, it's not bad writing by any means, but it just seemed kind of awkward and badly handled at certain parts.

Sorry, I made that post in a bit too much haste. The question Chronopolis was asking would indeed go better in the KS thread, and I see it's been taken there.

Nevertheless, the point stands, don't feel you have to take things to their own threads if you don't want to - VNs are not yet at the degree of popularity where we plan to break up the general discussion here and enforce a separation, as we did with currently airing anime.

Agreed. This thread already gets a relatively modest amount of traffic - given KS is very much a relevant topic, it's absolutely fine to post stuff here too.

Aaaand that's it for Muv-Luv Unlimited. Exposition and Prologue are done I suppose; on to the main dish.

@Sapz: actually, how long is Alternative? vndb just gives "above 50 hours" as an estimation.

Assuming you did just the two main routes in Extra and one in Unlimited, Alternative is a little longer than those put together, IIRC. 50 hours sounds about right for what I spent on it, being a fairly fast reader.

What did you think of Unlimited? It's no Alternative of course, but I enjoyed it a lot more than Extra.

At any rate, prepare to have your mind blown by how awesome MLA is. :V

Extra's kind of weird for me, the two main routes were very boring, but the other routes were amazingly hilarious. Especially Tama's.
Re: Visual Novels!
« Reply #115 on: February 10, 2012, 12:36:25 pm »
'twas alright I suppose, better than Extra but that's not really an achievement. Had it's moments and I'm looking forward to read one of the (apparently) best VNs in existence so a bit of buildup is fine.

Actually, I read all the routes to delay both Unlimited (and now Alternative, not that you could call them routes in Unlimited) thanks to impeding exams. Well, just about as boring and drawn out as the main routes (Sataki's in Extra forced me to put on some Umineko BGM to bear with it [improving your average eroge since 2011]) but I'm a completionist by nature so it probably would've happened even without exams.

But really, the suit-design for the ladies is an insult.   ... and it worries me that I got used to it by now. Damn you genre-conventions, I don't need to see nipples in every scene thank you. :V

@Desu: Funny in a bad way I suppose. At least Tama's was quite short compared to Sataki's and Kei's endless eight. Unlimited spoiler: the lack of crazy-mustache saddened me. Tamaaaaaaaa~-otou-san, why? That mustache had more personality than you, that's homicide! Or abortion, denied even the right to exist in the first place, however you want to look at it.

If you're interested in Steins;Gate the anime is much much much better than the game IMHO.

If you got interested in the game because of the anime, well, you'll be sorely disappointed... The writing was too much on the confusing side for my tastes and had little in the way of actual development amidst the chaos  :ohdear:
